Dam

The Piper Pond Association was initially formed to assume ownership and maintenance of the dam in 1984.

Volunteers from the association routinely inspect the dam and make repairs.  The deck boards were most recently replaced in 2016.  Thanks to Larry Glidden and Glidden Lumber for  donating the lumber.

Eventually the dam will need more extensive repairs and part of our membership dues go into a fund for future repairs as well as paying property taxes.

Dam History

Piper Pond dam in 1987 before construction of the current structure.

In the late 1980's the wood crib dam across the outlet stream had deteriorated  until there was just one log remaining to hold back the flow.  This caused large fluctuations of up to 20" from the normal spring high to late summer lows.  The current dam was constructed to maintain the normal higher water  levels for a longer period of time.  Plans were developed, permits obtained, and the new dam constructed in the same location  in August of 1987.  The construction included building a 40 ft wide spillway at a level of 619 ft above sea level and rebuilding of the berms on either side of the dam.  The materials and labor were mostly donated.

The abutments on each end of the spillway were reworked in Sept. of 2006.

Repairs were made to the face of the west side abutment in September 2024 and trees behind the abutment removed.
