Invasive Plant Patrol
Invasive plants present a significant risk to our lake. Lakes in southern Maine (see map) have become infested and these plants could easily be transported to Piper Pond by boats, fishing gear, and boat trailers. Once an invasive aquatic species has established in a body of water, it is extremely difficult to get rid of it. These efforts are costly and not always successful. The impact on recreation and property values would be enormous. It is imperative that we do all we can to prevent the introduction of invasive plants into our lake and catch them before they have an opportunity to spread. Trained association volunteers have been patrolling the lake looking for invasive plants. If you would like to help or have questions please contact Peter Koltai.
A sign located at the public boat ramp instructs boaters to remove all plants but we must be diligent and educate ourselves and others.
Inspect your boat, trailer, and fishing gear. Dispose of plants into a trash bag not at water's edge.
Inform any visitors or renters of the hazard so that they don't inadvertently spread an invasive plant.
